AMMAN - UN Women Representative for Jordan and Syria country office, Giuseppe Belsito, expressed optimism over Jordan’s official and non-official efforts to support women's rights, achieve gender equality and ensure empowerment of women.
In a statement to Petra, Belsito announced the 2014 UN work strategy for women in Jordan, which focuses on economic empowerment, seeks to abolish Article 308 of the Penal Code, increase women's political participation and encourage the government to implement UN resolution 1325 on women.
"Through this strategy, we will seek to remove obstacles facing economic empowerment of women through education and equal opportunities and participation," he added.
He said that Jordan's joining of the UN’s "COMMIT" initiative along with 61 states was a positive and important step along the path to reform laws.
The Kingdom has recently joined the UN’s "COMMIT" initiative that calls on leaders worldwide to make concrete commitments to end violence against women and girls by establishing a roadmap for the future and implementing specific legal measures. (Petra)
