At a record speed, the security services managed to arrest two people who have caused the death of an Iraqi citizen in Abdullah Ghosheh street, while trying to steal his wallet, at the same time inquiries and investigations began into those involved in the killing of a field commander in the Free Syrian Army in the area of Shafa Badran yesterday.
Until now, the official version still excludes political motives as the reason behind the murder of the leader of the Syrian opposition, and refers to the matter, often, as a crime. However, it would be really worrying if it turns out that the motive behind it was political; it would be an unpleasant signal that the regional wars have come to Jordan!
It is a burden too big, necessarily, that is the responsibility of the armed forces and security agencies; as we read about the great efforts to control the border with Syria, and a clash with elements that tried to infiltrate, while the military command deployed thousands of soldiers to the Iraqi border in anticipation of any developments or surprises after the deterioration of the security situation in Iraq, with the emergence of the "Islamic state".
The security agencies are showing a great deal of readiness to deal with the great transformations in the neighboring countries, which is reflected domestically through the millions of guests who came here in pursuit of security. The armed forces sent reassuring messages, as the military leadership opened the door for a recruitment drive to cope with these developments.
These messages are steps for preparation that are important and necessary. But, whatever the capacity of the army and security is, the burden of dealing with a stage filled with explosive both politically and security-wise is not simple, and should still include a lot of political work. It is essential that there are political messages and preparations for a national process to identify the sources of risk and the threat at home and abroad.
When talking about the cornerstones for the survival of Jordan from the regional "trap", we will find multiple factors. At the same time, we have to think the threat, too, and the issues that are causing anxiety and panic among a large proportion of the citizens.
As such, in spite of deep satisfaction that we have, and with our friends and allies, because there are "brakes" that prevent the spillover of the conflict in the region to us, such as the lack of a sectarian rift in Jordan, but we should fear that the many domestic issues we have, which have accumulated for long now, can potentially occupy all of our attention if we look at their totality.
It's nice that some writers respond to the real concerns of the growth of hard-liners at home, but what would be more beautiful and better is if those writings were based on objective and realistic analysis, not sensationalism and shameful incitement.
Bottom line is to say that we are required today to do our politics in parallel with eying the security perspective, spreading ideas and opinions about a comprehensive national review, reaching a national-social contract that will function as an internal safety valve. When will officials realize the importance and seriousness of this at once?!
