Committee to Decide on Location of Jordan-Iraqi Industrial Zone

AMMAN —AlGhad— A specialised technical committee, formed by the government, has begun looking into the locations, suggested by the Iraqi authorities, for the establishment of the joint Jordan-Iraqi industrial zone, an informed source uncovered to AlGhad.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, in the current caretaker government, Eng Yaroub Qudah and Iraqi Minister of Industry and Minerals Eng Mohammad Soudani, agreed on the establishment of the industrial zone back in September 2017.

The industrial zone project is going to be established on the joint border areas between Jordan and Iraq.

Chairman of the Jordan Industrial Cities Company Board of Directors Dr Luai Suhweil estimates that the location of the zone will be decided within a few months.

Exports to Iraq have dropped from JOD882 million in 2013 to JOD330 million in 2016.

Overall national exports have declined by 13 per cent during the first two months of the year, 2018. Exports dropped from JOD65.5 million to JOD56.8 million, date by the Department of Statistics indicate.

The joint industrial zone is expected to reflect positively on the economy in general, and trade with and through Iraq, officials and sources have reaffirmed.
