Farmers Warn Taxing Produce Fatal to Sector as Protest Enters 23rd Day

AMMAN —AlGhad— The farmers’ protest in front of Parliament in Amman enters its 23rd day today, Sunday, as the government has yet to publically recognise the farmers’ demands or agree to meet them.

The farmers committee claims the government has long neglected the sector, only to arrive now at the decision to impose a 10 per cent tax on the inputs and outputs of the agriculture.

According to the Farmers Defence Committee, taxing produce will only complicate the sector’s suffering, “after everything they’ve been through.”

The committee calls for the government to retract its decision and work towards further incentives for the sector.
