AMMAN —AlGhad— At least 2,500 freight trucks are on standby for the reopening of the Karamah-Treibil border crossing with Iraq, according to the Chairman of the freight truckers association, Mohammad Khair Dawood.

In a statement to AlGhad, Dawood said the relaunch of commerce and shipping between Jordan and Iraq will be gradual, over phases.

The point of the phases is to safely pick up the pace of commercial activity.

In phase one, shipping activities will mainly entail freight exchange at the border crossing; Jordanian trucks will carry in freights from Iraq, loaded at the crossing, and vice versa.

Later on, when it is safe enough for transportation to restore full capacity, both ways, Dawood added, the flow of Jordanian and Iraqi freight shipping will be restored.

Meanwhile, the freight shipping sector has incurred around JOD665 million in losses, due to the shutdown of the border crossing with Iraq, in total, over the last few years.

Notably, the national freight, land shipping sector is worth around JOD1.5 billion.

More than 17 thousand trucks operate various interstate routes, providing for nearly 50 thousand Jordanian households.
