WASHINGTON — Fifteen prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay detention center, which was opened after the September 11 attacks, were sent to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Pentagon said Monday.
"The United States is grateful to the government of the United Arab Emirates for its humanitarian gesture and willingness to support ongoing US efforts to close Guantanamo", it added in a statement.
The Pentagon says 61 detainees now remain at Guantanamo, which was opened in January 2002.
