AMMAN — Prime Minister Dr Hani Mulqi received at his Prime Ministry's office on Tuesday the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, and his accompanying delegation.

During talks, the premier discussed with the UN official cooperation between the Kingdom and the Commission to meet the diverse needs of the Syrian refugees, as well as rigorous burdens facing Jordan as it is hosting about 1.3 million Syrians on its soil.

Mulqi stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation and coordination with the (UNHCR) and concerned international organizations to urge the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards Jordan and to help it address repercussions of the Syrian refugee crisis.

He said Jordan, which is carrying out this humanitarian and national duty towards the Syrian refugees on behalf of the international community as a whole, can no longer bear further pressure posed by the Syrian refugee plight on the country's infrastructure and on major sectors such as health, education, water and host communities.

On the Syria situation, Mulqi said Jordan hopes and seeks to restore stability in Syria and to create the appropriate conditions for the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.

In turn, Grandi urged donors, international and humanitarian organizations and the international community to assume their responsibilities to ensure continued support to Jordan, in a bid to press ahead with its humanitarian role in hosting refugees and providing basic services to them countrywide.

I picked Jordan as the first country in the region to visit in recognition of the Kingdom's crucial role in hosting refugees, the UN official said, and added the Commission would urge the international community to back Amman to push ahead with this key humanitarian effort.
