CAPITALS —AlGhad— US President Donald Trump is reportedly likely to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in a speech next Wednesday, according to the CNN and the Independent.
Notably, Trump is not the first president to promise the relocation US embassy and recognition of Jerusalem as capital.
However, he does support the claim that Israelis have a right to the entirety of Jerusalem.
If the decision is taken, it could imperil an already elusive peace process.
Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem in 1967 and subsequent occupation of the area is still considered illegal by the United Nations.
Palestinians assert a right to at least part of Jerusalem, which contains multiple holy sites revered by Muslims.
