Unemployment at 18%, 13.4% among Males: Workforce Census

AMMAN —AlGhad— A recent workforce census underway by the Department of Public Statistics indicates that the rate of unemployment in Jordan hovers around 18 per cent for the second quarter of the year, Q2-2018, down from 0.2 per cent in Q1-2017, under the newly adopted method, according to Department Director, Qassem Zoubi.

In regards to news circulating indices compared to figures of 2016, economics journalist Samah Beibars contacted Mr Zoubi, who confirmed that the comparison to previous years is invalid.

He underlined that the new statistical methods have only been adopted since the beginning of 2017, and that comparative census results from 2016 are based on different methods.

Among males, the census indicates, some 13.4 per cent are unemployed, as opposed to 33.9 per cent among females, in the same period.

The sampled population amounts to nearly 16 thousand households, from all of the Kingdom’s governorates.
