AMMAN —AlGhad— The authorities successfully intervened to prevent the outbreak of chaos and unrest in Madaba Monday evening, in an area inhabited by relatives of the main suspect in the assault case of Jordanian youth Zaid Fayez, Emad Shawabkeh, a source with the Public Security Directorate (PSD) confirmed.

Later last night, figureheads of the Shawabkeh tribe turned in three of the eight alleged assailants in the case. Two are already in police custody, the source confirmed.

The search is still ongoing for the three remaining assailants identified by the police.

Earlier that day, the victim’s tribe, Al Fayez, issued a statement threatening to avenge the assault if the government does not apprehend the five suspects within three days.

An angry tribal mob circled the neighbourhood firing live ammunition in the air, in a blatant show of force, threatening the safety and security of the residents.

Within minutes, gendarmerie forces intervened and dispensed the mob, containing the situation and restoring peace to the neighbourhood.

Investigations are ongoing still, the source told AlGhad, to uncover the full detail of the case.

Authorities earlier this week issued a gag order, prohibiting the publication of any unofficial news or statements on the matter until further notice.
