CAPITALS —AlGhad— Rebel factions in south Syria have agreed to give up arms in a Russia-brokered ceasefire deal on Friday, rebel sources said, surrendering Deraa province to the government in another major victory for the Syrian army and Russian allies.

The surrender came after Syrian-Russian forces launched a major offensive to reclaim Daraa and the Nassib border crossing with Jordan.

They succeeded.

Earlier the factions had issued statements rejecting the provisions and clauses of the ceasefire deal introduced by Russia. But they later complied.

A state television correspondent said the surrender talks in Deraa were continuing, and no final deal had been reached because of differences between the rebel groups.

The Nassib crossing has been under rebel control for three years, state media reported.

In the aftermath of the assault which recovered the crossing and other provinces in the Syrian south, rebel sources said Russia would guarantee the safe return of thousands of IDPs amassed near the Syria-Jordan border.

Media reports say nearly 320,000 people have taken refuge near the border.
